We are pleased to introduce Morag Peers as our new Director of Scottish Studies!
Morag grew up in Edinburgh, Scotland and now lives in Glasgow. As a Professional Genealogist, she teaches family history for beginners, presents at family history societies around the world, and has presented at RootsTech.
Her love of genealogy began when she was a teenager. An uncle visiting from the United States had built a large family tree and gave a copy to every family member. Morag started studying for her MSc in Genealogical Studies at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, graduating in 2023. While she was studying, she researched many fields including people applying for passports, emigrants from and immigrants to Scotland, and digging deep into many other interesting family genealogies.
Morag’s passion for genealogy has led her to help families solve decades-old mysteries. She also enjoys taking her clients out to explore the streets where their ancestors lived and worked. While researching, she is always surprised at how large families were and how little they moved around. Her grandfather was one of 11 children, and his father was one of 13 children in their respective families.
When she isn’t working with clients or researching her own family, Morag can be found hiking in the countryside around Glasgow, knitting, and baking. She volunteers one day a week at a local charity shop where she finds treasures to bring home.
Fun fact about Morag: she occasionally works as an extra for movies and TV series. She has been a villager in a Scottish movie, a bored office worker on a train, and has recently spent two days wearing a corset as an 18th-century peasant in a period drama.
Welcome, Morag, to IIGS. We’re looking forward to working with and learning from you!
