Scottish: Emigration and Immigration Records is the latest course in our Scottish Records Certificate. Written by our Director of Scottish Studies, Morag Peers MSc, this advanced level course explores the records along with the ‘how and why’ of the movement of the Scottish population. What You Will Learn: The course begins with an overview of the laws concerning both emigration and immigration, naturalization, nationality, and where to find the records. You will explore emigration from Scotland pre and post 1850. Discussions will include the Jacobite Rebellions, Highland and Lowland Clearances, the transportation of criminals, and indentured servitude. You will look at passenger lists, crew lists, shipbuilding records, Canada’s Home Children as well opportunities for women who wished to emigrate. The course includes in depth discussions of immigration to Scotland focussing on Irish Immigration, Italian Immigration, and Jewish Immigration. Irish immigration discussions include the Great Famine, seasonal migration, and the Post Famine Emigration both to and from Scotland. Common names, name variations, and how to locate Irish Immigrants on the census is looked at in depth. The module which focusses on Italian Immigration to Scotland includes the history of their immigration. You will discuss Roman Catholic Records as well as the roles Italian Scots played in both WWI and WWII. WWII interment records are included in the discussion as well as where and why people were sent there.
