DNA: Introduction to Genetic Genealogy

Are you curious about Genetic Genealogy but unsure of where to start?

DNA: Introduction to Genetic Genealogy will give you a firm understanding of the basics of DNA testing and how it can be applied to your genealogical research.

DNA: Introduction to Genetic Genealogy begins with the history of genetics, which goes back over 100 years.

You will learn the biology of cells and the structure of DNA. An explanation of chromosomes, how they duplicate and divide, and the process of meiosis. How your DNA is extracted from sample collection, the three-step process of analyzing it, and what the data means are discussed.

The course goes on to explore the different types of DNA: Mitochondrial, Y Chromosome, and Autosomal.  Within the overviews of each type, you will learn their respective haplogroups, and how to identify mutations. The module for each type of DNA includes a case study which explains how testing can assist in your genealogical research.

The course concludes with a discussion of how the advances in genetics have made DNA testing readily available. An exploration of what to consider when choosing a testing company is covered.

DNA and Genetic Genealogy has opened many doors for genealogists. Several of our students have begun highly successful careers after completing their DNA & Genetic Genealogy Certificates.

This course is included in our DNA & Genetic Genealogy and our Personal Historian Certificate Programs. It can also be taken as an elective or for personal interest.
