In this intermediate level course, you will learn about the value of cemetery records and how they will enhance your research. Each of the four modules focuses on different aspects of these records, including what to look for, where to find them, and what they may include in terms of genealogical research.
What You Will Learn:
The first module gives you an overview of what to look for while researching inscriptions, as well as a history of burials in Ireland. As not every memorial to the dead is inscribed on a headstone, you will explore some of the different monuments where you may find valuable genealogical information.
The course continues with a discussion of the poetry and images often engraved on headstones. You will also discover the importance of the placement of a grave as well as what to consider regarding grave markers.
Visiting a cemetery can provide a large amount of information. Best practices on photographing and transcribing inscriptions are discussed, as well as special considerations prior to your visit.
You will explore strategies for searching out different monumental inscriptions. Along with online databases, there are many other places where you many find information. These include parish records, journals and periodicals, among others.
The course material includes several beautiful photographs from the author’s private collection, as well as links to several videos on YouTube to enhance your learning.
Each module includes a comprehensive list of websites and recommended reading for further insight.
Course author, Claire Bradley MA, has compiled an additional resource for the course. It is a comprehensive list of where to find monumental inscriptions and transcriptions for every county in Ireland and is intended as a guide only. While not mandatory course material, it is recommended for students taking the course.
