Research: Irish Ancestors Course Update

Find your Irish Ancestors with this updated course!

This intermediate level course gives you a solid foundation for researching your Irish Ancestry. Looking at the first two centuries of Irish family history, the course covers both Northern Ireland, which remains a part of Britain, and the Republic of Ireland, which has been independent since 1922.

The focus will be on researching from home as many Irish records are available online. The course discusses where the records are stored, and how to utilize them.

The course contains four modules, each of which focuses on different discovery points for research.

The first module discusses the history of Ireland including emigration, as well as Irish geography, county index maps, and administrative subdivisions.  Included in the module is an introduction to Irish research, a look at some of the challenges you may face, and suggestions on how to overcome those challenges.

The following modules explore subjects such as civil registration, census returns, church registers, and probate records.

You will learn how to obtain various certificates and what information they may contain. Course discussions include how to search through census records, what information they contain, and alternative records to turn to when a census is not available. The availability of church records for different denominations is explored, as well as how to find the right parish pertaining to your research. Other resources such as probate records, occupational records, and how to locate research that has previously been done are included in the fourth module.

The appendix includes information on archives held in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, along with Irish Family History Societies.

Each module contains a list of websites as well as suggestions for further reading to enhance your research.

Research: Irish Ancestors is an elective that can be added to any certificate program. It can also be taken for personal interest.

This course isn’t all-inclusive on Irish genealogy research. The International Institute of Genealogical Studies offers an entire Irish Records program to help you become an excellent Irish researcher.
