The Benefits of being an IIGS Student

Our students enjoy the benefits of studying with IIGS

Sometimes it takes a huge leap of faith to jump off the proverbial fence and dive into something new. You begin to wonder if it would be worth your time and money. You think about it again and ask yourself, “What’s in it for me? What would I gain from this?”

IIGS is not just another site offering online courses – we have a heartfelt desire to help you achieve your dreams of becoming a genealogist. You can contact us via email, our website chat app, and by phone. You’ll talk with a real person, we don’t use bots or those endless phone menus that keep you pushing numbers to actually reach someone.

Our student advisors are available to help you decide on what courses and certificate programs best fit your needs. We have student mentors who can help you navigate your course work, an educational YouTube channel with over 100 different videos, and a private student-only Facebook group to keep you up to date on our Virtual Meetings, course updates, and our special speaker events. Our students benefit from monthly Virtual Meetings with our instructors. These meetings give them a chance to ask questions, clarify course work, and learn new skills.

Our new website is user friendly to make learning fun and easy! It includes downloadable PDFs of our course content for you to print at home, or, if you prefer, you can order it already printed from our store. Some of our courses have required reading, so to save you time and money we’ve included them in our store as well.

Our courses are affordable – buy one at a time, buy a package of several to save money, or buy a full certificate program to save you even more! Study on your own time, when it fits your schedule. If something comes up, just give us a call so we can help you adjust your course start and end dates.

When you have completed a full certificate program you will be invited to participate in an online graduation ceremony that celebrates your accomplishments. You will be awarded with a recognized post nominal of PLCGS (Professional Learning Certificate in Genealogical Studies) that can be transferred to several universities for credit (such as the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland).

Many of our students have highly successful careers in the world of genealogy. Several work in the field of Genetic Genealogy solving cold cases and repatriating fallen soldiers, some work in museums or archives, some give lectures and presentations at events such as RootsTech, while others have created their own genealogical business with a wait list of clients.

What are you waiting for?

Take that leap of faith, jump off the fence!

Course Update! Irish: Land and Property Records

Course Update Written by Claire Bradley, MA

Irish: Land and Property Records (formerly Irish: Land and Administration Records) has just been updated and released on our website, GenealogicalStudies.com! Our Director of Irish Studies, Claire Bradley, MA, has revised the course with the most recent information for those researching their Irish ancestors.

This six-module course begins with the history of land tenure and identifying geographical locations. You will learn about land wars, reforms and regulations, as well as how to find your ancestor’s townland or location.

The course continues with a discussion of land deeds and the registration process for them. You will learn how to locate deeds in repositories along with their accessibility.

Property Valuation Records are explored including the history of these records. The module contains a thorough explanation of the importance of Griffith’s Primary Valuation of Ireland, including what to look for in these valuable records.

The difference between several Estate records is examined. You will learn a description of their records, their history, along with where to find them in repositories.

The course concludes with a discussion of some lesser-known land commissions and their records. The discussion includes a general description of the records as well as their accessibility in repositories.

Each module includes a listing of websites for further information as well as a recommended reading list.
