British: Military Records is an intermediate level course which details the military system and records of the United Kingdom. This in-depth course covers England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.
Prior to 1922, the whole of Ireland was part of the United Kingdom. Irish men served in the British army throughout its modern history from the end of the 18th century. Irish military records relating to its independence period (1916-1922) and the subsequent army records of the Irish Free State (later the Republic of Ireland) will be covered in a separate course.
What You Will Learn:
This six-module course begins with a look at the geography of the United Kingdom including a definition of “British”. You will find a timeline of the United Kingdom, a map showing its geography, and an explanation of how the British Military was organized in the past.
The course continues with the history and duties of the Army, Royal Marines and Militia, the East India Company including Colonial Regiments, and the Royal Air Force and Navy.
You will discuss the history and organization of each of these military components. Detailed charts give you an overview of how each regiment was organized including timelines, ranks of the officers, and their duties. You will also find a timeline of important dates, including conflicts and military action, ranging from 1640 to 1963.
Available military records including where to find them and what they contain, along with extracts of some records, are given in detail. These records include the various roles women played in the military as members of regiments, clerical staff, nursing, and radio operators.
Each module contains a comprehensive list of websites as well as suggestions for further reading to enhance your research.
This new course replaces the following three courses: English/Scottish: Occupations – Military & Services, Scottish/English: Military & Services, and Irish: Military, Naval and Pension Records.
British: Military Records is included in our English Records, Irish Records, and Scottish Records certificate programs. It can also be taken as an elective in any of our certificate programs or for personal interest.
