Course Update! English Census Records Including Wales

Historic census records hold a wealth of material for genealogists. These important records not only help you find your ancestors, but they can also give you a snapshot of their lives.

English: Census Records Including Wales will take you from early census records beginning in 1801 through to the 1939 National Register of England and Wales.

You will explore the history of census taking including the 1086 Domesday Book, the earliest surviving census of England and parts of Wales.

The course examines what information was gathered for specific censuses, what the column headings tell you, and the terms and abbreviations used. You will also look at issues you may come across such as transcription errors or double entries.

Other enumerations are discussed including the 1939 National Registration as well as several historical indexes.

You will learn where to view the records along with how to document your findings.

The course includes a comprehensive list of websites along with suggested reading to enhance your knowledge of census taking.

English: Census Records Including Wales is included in our English Records Certificate Program. It can also be taken as an elective in any of our certificate programs or for personal interest.
