September Student Lounge

Calling all students! Just a reminder, we have our September Student Lounge virtual meeting coming up this week. It is a time set aside each month to pull up a chair and connect with fellow students, while listening to a short presentation by our special guest. This month, our guest will be Denise I. Griggs

Denise Griggs is an author of books for children and young adults about genealogy, diversity, and theology. She earned her B.A. and M.A. degrees from a Christian university and has worked in both Education and Ministry. Ms. Griggs volunteered for over 30+ years in children’s ministry, family genealogy research, and teaching African American Genealogy. She has researched the Griggs and Hunt families for over 40 years and for the Hunt family back to eighth century England and Ireland. She has connected with DNA cousins in Ireland, Canada, England, Mississippi, and across the United States. Denise is a 2021 Phyllis Wheatley award recipient from the Sons and Daughters of the United States Middle Passage, and a 2022 Finalist Award recipient from the Next Generation Indie Book award in the category of African American History & Culture. She volunteers for the subcommittees of History and Research, part of the PR/Marketing Team for the Natchez U.S. Colored Troops (USCT) Monument Committee – Natchez, MS, a volunteer for the National Park Service, and she has an ancestor who was a homesteader listed on their Black Homesteader webpage.

A Sneak Peek

Take a sneak peek and be among the first to visit our brand-new Int’l Institute of Genealogical Studies YouTube ChannelBe sure to SUBSCRIBE to see more videos as they are added.

Did you notice the name change? This was announced in the Student Orientation Fall sessions, along with some more exciting upcoming changes. The National Institute was founded in Canada, but we have students from around the world. With our new head office in Montana, the name highlights the fact that we cover across the border of both Canada and the United States. But this does not reflect our international students, so the name will be transitioning to the International Institute for Genealogical Studies. Our YouTube channel is the first to reflect our new name. Watch for more exciting news coming!

Our first uploaded video was our Back to School Orientation Fall 2022 recording of the evening session on August 30th. We hope it will help students who are a little overwhelmed as they begin their online education experience with The Institute. We have also added the last two Student Lounge presentations: Related Faces with Tina LaFreniere (July 2022) and MyHeritage DNA with Daniel Horowitz (August 2022). We will be adding more videos, so subscribe and check back frequently.

September is a great month to reassess and pursue your genealogical education goals. Not sure where to start? We invite you to check out our list of courses, and the packages that we offer to enhance your genealogy skills. Are you considering a genealogy career? Our certificate programs will prepare you to launch into your genealogy business.

Need help to set up an education plan? Let us know how we can help you to successfully continue your genealogy education through our online courses. Your success is our goal!

Course Date Changes

We hear you! Announcement for Course Date Changes

Planning for 2023, and being aware of the difficulty opening and closing dates of courses can cause when they open and/or close on a holiday or holiday weekend, we are listening to our student feedback. Thank you for letting us know that we could improve your student experience by avoiding course start and end dates on a holiday or holiday weekend.

Though we cannot avoid every single special day of the year for every single country (there just aren’t enough days in the year!), we are able to adjust for most of them. If you have noticed a date change on the first day or last day of your course, it is because we listened to you, our students, and moved the dates to lessen your stress.

We hope this raises your enjoyment of taking courses at the National Institute for Genealogical Studies AND we are hopeful it will lower your stress in completing your exams and courses into the future. We love our student genealogists!

Related Faces Featured in July Student Lounge

At The National Institute for Genealogical Studies, we enhance the online learning experience for our students by promoting #StudentLife opportunities. Every month, there is a Student Lounge virtual meeting scheduled for our students. Since we have migrated our meetings to the Zoom platform, we are now planning to offer special presentation sessions, beginning with our July Student Lounge. Watch for our next scheduled Student Lounge Virtual Meetings in our VIRTUAL LEARNING ROOM.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
RELATED FACES
In July, we were pleased to offer a bonus to our regular Student Lounge session. We had a special presentation from guest speaker: Tina LaFreniere of Related Faces. Tina developed Related Faces to help identify people in antique photos. She shared this exciting new resource for identifying those unlabeled photos in our inherited family collections by pairing recognizable facial features of family members, even if they are different ages. This will definitely advance our family history storytelling by enabling us to visually display our past extended family members to the current generation who never knew them.
You can begin with a 14-Day FREE Trial to set up your profiles for each family member and their photos. Privacy is ensured for living people. Please follow Copyright restrictions, which means you should only use photos that you have, or have permission to use. Then upload your photos and start pairing. Related Faces will identify the same or similar faces in photos and allows you to organize your photos on your home page. You will be able to connect to other users to collaborate, and perhaps discover new family connections. Mobile uploads allow you to scan and add photos right from your mobile device. It also has a feature to compare your photos to the United States Library of Congress’ photo collection.
As a Thank You to The National Institute for Genealogical StudiesRelated Faces is offering a 25% Discount for a limited time to our students, and has graciously extended the invitation to our followers as well.
Coupon Code: RFELWQPJ66.
Please Note: This coupon will expire on 15 August 2022.
We encourage our followers to take advantage of the 14-Day FREE Trial at Related Faces and explore what this website has to offer. You may solve a long-time family photo mystery, or even topple a brick wall by identifying that face beside your ancestor.
NOTE: You can view a recording of the presentation that was given in this session here.
Student Lounge Virtual Meetings
At The National Institute for Genealogical Studies, we want to enhance the online learning experience for our students by promoting #StudentLife opportunities. Every month, there is a virtual meeting scheduled just for our students to connect and share. As genealogy is often a solitary endeavour, this is an opportunity to join others who are just as enthusiastic about family history and anxious to discuss research topics. Students can enquire about courses they are interested in registering for, or question students who have already completed them. Sharing their experiences with newer students is valuable!
As an added bonus since mid-July, we have migrated our meetings to the Zoom platform, where students can now interact face-to-face and engage in verbal discussions rather than be limited to only typing in the chat box. They can now put a face to the names they have seen in the comments and discussions for their online assignments. #StudentLife is more than recognizing the names of their fellow students, it is getting to know them! After all, many of these students may become contacts in their future researcher networks.
The schedule for all of our Virtual Meetings can be found on our website under VIRTUAL LEARNING ROOM. Watch for our next Student Lounge when the monthly Virtual Meetings schedule is posted here to our blog.
Watch for upcoming Special Presentations in our Students Lounge sessions.
