Genealogical Goals for 2023

Most of the major holiday celebrations have come to a close. Perhaps you were fortunate enough to have opportunity to visit with family, and even to interview some of your family members, or browse through family photos. Be sure to take the time to record any family stories you were able to discover over this holiday season. Don’t neglect recording your own 2022 memories as well. It certainly was another year to remember!

Now it is time to get ready to plan for new genealogical adventures for 2023. What do you hope to discover? Do you have a specific research focus? Making Realistic Genealogical Goals is key to successful research, both in the short term, and with long lasting rewards. Knowing what you want to accomplish is not enough. You need to make definite plans. Are you planning to apply to a lineage society? Do you need to get your files and documents organized? Implement a system that works for you. Have you lost where you left off in your research? Review the notes for your findings and make a proper Research Plan. Forgot where you found that information? Be sure to always cite your sources at the time of the discovery. This gives opportunity for you to review your work and make sure you will be able to find that source again. When the accessibility of repositories is unavailable, or closed to in-person visits, work on what you can achieve at home and stay organized. Make a detailed list of what has been left undone and needs to have follow-up analysis. Then set your goals for how you will complete each task for each of your research projects. You have a brand-new open calendar before you – plan your time wisely.

Do you have education goals for 2023? Make a list of the topics you want to pursue. How can you accomplish this goal? Is there a new book to read on the topic? Are there webinars to watch? Does the topic require more in-depth study over a period of time? Is online education on your list of goals for 2023?

Browse our Institute courses and packages to determine which courses will accomplish your 2023 education goals. Make a Wish List and check the Start Dates under the Register tab for each course. Register for your courses and schedule them according to the availability on your 2023 calendar. Don’t worry; you can reschedule the start date later, if needed.

Do you need help choosing the best plan to meet your goals? Don’t hesitate to contact us. We are here to help you accomplish your goals!

LEADERS IN ONLINE GENEALOGY EDUCATION since 1997

American Colonial Courses

The National Institute for Genealogical Studies offers online genealogical education for family history enthusiasts, genealogists and historians. Our courses are offered in Basic, Intermediate, or Advanced levels. You can register for courses individually, or receive a discount by choosing from a variety of packages. These are bundled either by specific theme or can be customized to your own interests. Check out our full list of Packages.

Courses are usually scheduled to begin on the first Monday of the month, however, not all courses are available monthly. Be sure to check under the Register tab in the course description for the dates when the courses of your choice are scheduled to open again. You can check our current Course Calendar here to see which courses are scheduled to begin next.

In our list of online courses, there are four courses covering the colonial period of the Eastern United States, focusing on the original Thirteen Colonies. These are valuable resources for anyone researching in this region and timeframe.

Research: Mayflower Ancestors
This course studies some of the very first settlers of Massachusetts. Learn how to properly document a descendant line by utilizing New England original and derivative records, as well as sources specific to Mayflower research. Following their story, and tracing each consecutive generation, is a great way to recognize the 400+ years since their arrival in North America.
Course Description for Research: Mayflower Ancestors

Research: US Colonial New England Ancestors
This course explores strategies for finding Colonial New England records while incorporating colonial town records, colonial census records, colonial land records and maps, the colonial wars, religious records, and court documents. Note: This is an Intermediate course. Experience with transcribing Colonial Handwriting will be a benefit.
Course Description for Research: US Colonial New England Ancestors

The American Revolutionary War was a major historical event which impacted many Colonial families. It is hard to imagine that any family was left unaffected. Many families were divided, with multiple factors leading to which side they eventually chose to pledge their loyalty to. If you reach a brick wall in your research during this time period, be sure to check both Loyalist and Patriot resources. Sometimes you will find family members on both sides as they navigated through this turbulent time in their lives. This was also a time of major migrations and relocations.

Fortunately, there have been numerous records created and preserved during the colonial period. Thankfully, various organizations have worked to digitize as many of the surviving records as possible. We just need to know how to access them to document our family’s stories and discover the part they played in these historical events.

Research: United Empire Loyalist Ancestors
This course describes what it meant to be a United Empire Loyalist in the context of the American Revolutionary War and how it affected their ensuing lives. This course will also discuss the membership and lineage requirements of the United Empire Loyalists Association of Canada (UELAC.org). Records include: military service, petitions, claims, land, and other records that will assist with documenting your UEL ancestor. The British North American colonies where the Loyalists went for resettlement include Upper Canada (Ontario)—where the original U.E. (Unity of Empire) tradition really took hold—the Maritime provinces, and Lower Canada (Quebec).
Course Description for Research: United Empire Loyalist Ancestors

US: Military Records (includes Revolutionary War)
This course includes records of conflicts in the United States and colonial America from the early colonial wars of the seventeenth century to the Revolutionary War, as well as the records of later conflicts to WW2. What is required for Military and Lineage Societies may be of particular interest as there is discussion of the various types of records created by military service, such as service records, muster rolls, pension records, and draft registration. Note: This is an advanced course.

Genealogy in a Package

Father’s Day is almost here! Some packages may already be arriving at your door or from the mall; while others are safely hidden away until it’s time to present them to Dad on his special day. We all love to receive packages. However, some package contents are better than others. Ties and joke T-shirts are fun (usually), and a gift card is fun to spend, but how much better if your package was genealogy-related?

Father’s Day is a great time to gather with family members and reminisce about childhood memories and great vacations. If you are gathering with siblings, aunts and uncles, or grandparents, ask questions about your family history and watch them share their memories to the next generation.

Do you have family members who are asking you what is on your Wish List? Have you been thinking about creating your genealogy wish list? How are you doing with your research goals? DNA Historical Studies Course Released

The wait is finally over! The National Institute for Genealogical Studies is pleased to announce the release of our newest online course AND the final compulsory course for our DNA and Genetic Genealogy Certificate. We have been anticipating the launch of DNA: Historical Studies as the 7th addition to our DNA courses. We promise that you will not be disappointed.

OUR NEWEST ADVANCED DNA COURSE

Genetic genealogy is a topic of immense interest to family history researchers looking to find connections to ancestors when traditional research has failed to provide results. Utilizing both DNA testing and traditional research methods can mean the difference between an elusive ancestor and a documented ancestor.

But DNA testing is not just for genealogists interested in family relationships and ethnicity estimates. DNA is well-known for solving cold cases for law enforcement. It has also been used to solve some of history’s biggest mysteries such as in the claims of historical identities. Cases explored in the course include Anna Anderson, the Titanic Baby, Jesse James, and the Golden State Killer.

What can these seemingly non-genealogical cases teach us? Learning more about DNA as it relates to genealogical cases and non-genealogical cases helps to expand and enhance our DNA knowledge and provides insights as we solve research problems. Students are encouraged to explore these cases presented in this course further by seeking out scientific journals and popular media articles.

Visit the DNA: Historical Studies page for more details. It is sure to inspire you to seek out current DNA projects, especially for events or mysteries related to your research projects. This course is scheduled to begin on the first Monday of every month. It is definitely a course to be added to your DNA Research education. Register today!
