Course Update Written by Claire Bradley, MA

Irish: Land and Property Records (formerly Irish: Land and Administration Records) has just been updated and released on our website, GenealogicalStudies.com! Our Director of Irish Studies, Claire Bradley, MA, has revised the course with the most recent information for those researching their Irish ancestors.

This six-module course begins with the history of land tenure and identifying geographical locations. You will learn about land wars, reforms and regulations, as well as how to find your ancestor’s townland or location.

The course continues with a discussion of land deeds and the registration process for them. You will learn how to locate deeds in repositories along with their accessibility.

Property Valuation Records are explored including the history of these records. The module contains a thorough explanation of the importance of Griffith’s Primary Valuation of Ireland, including what to look for in these valuable records.

The difference between several Estate records is examined. You will learn a description of their records, their history, along with where to find them in repositories.

The course concludes with a discussion of some lesser-known land commissions and their records. The discussion includes a general description of the records as well as their accessibility in repositories.

Each module includes a listing of websites for further information as well as a recommended reading list.
