As researchers, there are many skills we need to employ in order to achieve success in our research projects. One of the foundational research skills to develop at the International Institute of Genealogical Studies is Transcribing. All family history researchers, no matter what their level of expertise, should strive to acquire this core skill.

We offer three core courses which examine and demonstrate key Transcription principles and examples. These courses are offered at the beginning of every month:

Methodology-Part 2: Organizing and Skill-Building (Basic Level)
Skills: Transcribing, Abstracting & Extracting (Basic Level)
Palaeography: Reading & Understanding Historical Documents (Advanced)

Learning to master Transcription, Abstraction and Extraction skills will prove to be invaluable to your research, especially for in-depth analysis. It is recommended to transcribe every document you obtain. A line-by-line review will reveal clues often missed when we only skim a document for key information. It is an irreplaceable habit to develop.

Lecturing Skills course

Are you interested in developing your genealogy Lecturing Skills? With the uncertainty of restrictions for in-person meetings, many societies and organizations have taken the plunge to host virtual or hybrid meetings, many for the first time. This has created an increased need for presentation lectures and speakers ready to present online. The National Institute for Genealogical Studies / International Institute of Genealogical Studies offers many courses on specific topics, including our Lecturing Skills course.

The Lecturing Skills Including Preparation course focuses on the skills needed to present genealogical-related lectures to a variety of audiences. It is a “hands-on” course where the student will develop all aspects of the lecturing process including: the proposal and biographical sketch; marketing; syllabus material; creating lecture slides; and much more. The step-by-step course material will guide you all the way, creating templates to use over and over, no matter what your topic may be.

Note: In order to complete this course, the student must develop and give a 30-minute lecture to an audience of students and/or genealogical society members virtually via our Virtual Learning Room. This very practical application of skills learned will launch them with confidence into becoming a valuable asset to any genealogical society or organization, or add an additional income stream to their genealogical business plan.
