April 25th has been named as DNA DAY under such names as: National DNA Day, International DNA Day, or World DNA Day. It commemorates the discovery of DNA’s double helix structure in 1953 and the successful completion of the Human Genome Project in 2003. 

DNA is currently a very popular topic. Many have taken various DNA tests from a number of companies. Now what? How do we make sense of our results and analyze what that means for ourselves, and our genealogy research? There are so many resources available. April Courses Begin Next Week

Can you believe that April 1st is almost here? As we come to the end of the first Quarter of 2023, how are you doing with your 2023 Genealogy Goals? It’s time to review your goals and make adjustments. Did you make progress? Celebrate your achievements! Remember to break down larger projects into manageable chunks. Make sure you can see what you have accomplished and what needs to be worked on in this next Quarter.

April will also bring a new round of courses at the International Institute of Genealogical Studies. Check our Course Calendar to see which courses are being offered. These courses will open on Monday, April 3rd and most will have a completion date of May 28th. This is a significant date! Why?

SAVE THE DATE! 
Our next Graduation is now being planned for the last weekend of June 2023 for our students who have met all of the requirements to receive their PLCGS Certification. These certificates include: American Records Certificate, Australian Records Certificate, Canadian Records Certificate, Eastern European Records Certificate, English Records Certificate, German Records Certificate, Irish Records Certificate, and Librarianship Certificate. ALL required courses MUST be completed by May 31st in order to receive the certificate, making the April/May course rotation significant to those planning to graduate in June. 

PLEASE NOTE: If you have not completed your AS3 student consultations, be sure to book your appointments as soon as possible, as these must be completed by May 31st as well.

Don’t worry if you are close but not quite ready to graduate in June, there will be another Graduation scheduled near the end of 2023. Remember – Don’t rush through your courses. Give yourself TIME to get the most out of the materials being presented – to understand the concepts and how to apply them to your genealogy research projects. Be sure to add your next courses to your 2023 Genealogy Goals and schedule them for times when you can focus on them.

RootsTech 2023

Ready for RootsTech? We’re so excited the annual RootsTech conference is in-person once again! The International Institute of Genealogical Studies will be there with a booth in the Expo Hall. If you are attending RootsTech in Salt Lake City, be sure to drop by Booth #206 and say “Hi” to Angie, Julie, and Sue. We would love the opportunity to share with you what’s happening at the International Institute of Genealogical Studies. 

We love to meet our students! If you’re a current student, or a graduate, come and connect with us at the booth. If a past student, come and introduce yourself. If you’re interested in investing in additional genealogical education, come and check out our current list of courses, especially our DNA combination certificate packages. With our expansion and changes in this past year, we’d love to share them with you.

If you are not attending RootsTech in person, we will miss seeing you. We hope you can fit in a few virtual lectures on March 2nd to 4th. Be sure to REGISTER and take advantage of the opportunity to glean from their free online education. You are sure to find many sessions relevant to your research interests, as well as sessions to build your genealogical skills. 

If you are unable to attend during the live-streaming, watch for the recordings of the sessions in the RootsTech Library. There you will find many sessions from previous conferences as well. Are you overwhelmed by the volume of recordings available? Linda Debe, The Sleepless Genealogist, is one of our students, and also was one of the presenters at RootsTech 2022. Her session was Abstracts, Extracts, and Transcriptions, OH MY! The syllabus can be downloaded and the recording is available to be added to your Playlist. 

A resource to bookmark: Linda has created an excel spreadsheet of 2022 sessions, PLUS sessions from 2021 (Note: some 2021 session recordings may have been removed or updated). Her RootsTech List of Presentations file is available for download on her website under the Free Stuff tab. She will continue to update this file. Another valuable resource on her website  is her Geniebugs Calendar of Events.

RootsTech 2022 Tomorrow

RootsTech 2022 starts tomorrow! The Mainstage schedule is now available, and you can search more than 1,500 virtual Sessions on 185 topics in over 30 languages. Then add your choosen sessions to your Play List. Are you just getting ready for RootsTech 2022? This FamilySearch Blog post will get you started. 

If you did not attend RootsTech last year, you may want to take a look around the website to get familiar with the format for the next three days, or maybe you need a refresher. A Guide to Navigating the RootsTech 2022 Website will help you to have everything in place to start tomorrow.

Explore the RootsTech Expo Hall, which will open on Thursday, March 3rd at 8 am MST (GMT-7). There will be virtual booths for a wide variety of vendors and genealogical organizations. Explore their videos and handouts. Many companies will post tutorial videos for their products. Societies will also be hosting virtual booths. Some will offer personalized help from experts.
