Happy Mothers’ Day 2022

It is time once again to honour Mothers and celebrate this special day. Where would we be without all of the Moms on our Pedigree Charts?

Tracing the women in our family tree may be relatively easy now, but the farther back we go, the more challenging it is to find their day-to-day activities being recorded. The valued records that were preserved tend to be about the legal issues within the family rather than the social aspects of their daily routines. Yet, her role was so important.

Grandmothers, Mothers and Daughters

Our female ancestors not only played significant roles in our lives; they played their part in historical events as well. Researching at times can be a challenge, but we need to ensure that we persevere and tell their stories. Their voice must be heard.

Start with home resources, family heirlooms, and treasured mementoes connected to milestone events. Such items remind us of the connections we have to the past generations, and they provide great clues to pursue in our research. What were her interests? Did she belong to a volunteer organization? What were her accomplishments?

If you have hit a brick wall in the quest to find information about your female ancestors, consider registering for our Research: Grandmothers, Mothers & Daughters – Tracing Women course, which is just one of the online genealogy courses from The National Institute for Genealogical Studies.

This course is designed to guide you through the process of researching your family’s history by covering strategies and key sources you will need to access in order to overcome common challenges when tracing female ancestors. It will show you how to document “her” story and reveal the often-hidden aspects of their lives.

The Research: Grandmothers, Mothers & Daughters – Tracing Women course draws our attention to the material covered in this course. Check out course highlights in the following blog posts:

Part 1: Researching HER Story
Part 2: What’s in a Name?
Part 3: Digging Deeper into HER Story
Part 4: Timelines for the Ladies in our Tree

Check the Course Calendar schedule below to find the next start date and register today!

Special Announcement

A Special Announcement from The National Institute for Genealogical Studies:

In December, we announced that our course fees hadn’t been adjusted since December 2007! Yes, you read that correctly, 14 years ago! Nearly two years ago, in March 2020, we were in the process of again starting the process and then… Covid hit.

Tip: If you’d like to take advantage of the current prices, please place your order prior to May 15, 2022. You’ll save up to 20% before the course package and certification programs increase. Once the change occurs, the prices will be set.

If you have any questions, or you would like to know the most economical way of completing your program, please contact us:

LEADERS IN ONLINE GENEALOGY EDUCATION since 1997

Research A-Z ~ Z not the End

For the month of April, we have highlighted some of the 225+ genealogy and research courses offered at The National Institute for Genealogical Studies. There are a variety of themes and topics to choose from. Hopefully, we will feature some courses that you were not aware of and pique your interest to explore further.

Z is… NOT THE END

Z may be at the end of the alphabet, but it’s not the end! Our research will never be finished. There are always more leads to follow and another generation up or down the tree to seek out and document. There aren’t many names starting with Z: Zoey, Zachary, Zachariah, Zenas are a few forenames, and for surnames: Zinck, Zwicker, Zimmerman will be at the end of the line or the end of the index.

The study of Names in genealogy is interesting and can provide many clues when facing a brick wall in your research. Naming Patterns are extremely useful when families followed this tradition. German Rufnamen have thrown off more than a few researchers until it was understood. Some surnames were derived from occupations or geographic locations. Names can have several spelling variations, be shortened to specific nicknames, be found in abbreviated forms in documents, or look totally different when translated into another language. Knowing what to look for is important when researching, especially if you are identifying multiple people with the same name.

There are several Courses dealing with understanding the use of names and their origins.

Analysis and Skills Mentoring Program-Part 2
Eastern European: Languages & Alphabets
Electronic Resources: Using the Internet
English: Understanding Names in Genealogy
German: Naming Practices
Google for the Wise Genealogist
Organizing a One-Name Study
Palaeography: Reading & Understanding Historical Documents
Research: Danish Ancestors
Research: Dutch Ancestors in the Netherlands
Research: FamilySearch Resources – In Person and Online
Research: Scandinavian Ancestors
Scottish: Special Aspects of Scottish Research
Social Media Tools for the Wise Genealogist

Course Packages

You can customize your own package of courses. This is especially helpful if you have already completed some courses and want to register for the balance of the courses needed to complete your desired genealogy theme.

Course Package – 4 Courses
Course Package – 7 Courses
Course Package – 8 Courses
Course Package – 10 Courses

Research A-Z

Names are a major part of our research. When we understand their origins and the traditional naming patterns that may be used, we can recognize clues to their proper identity. A brick wall may seem like the end of your research, but there are always clues to take us further. Investigating all leads and following known practices will help you to analyze any conflicts you may discover.
