The Culture and Folklore of our Ancestors Play a Part in Forming who We Are Today.
Demystifying Culture and Folklore will take you on a journey through your ancestor’s stories, the importance they placed on symbols, and it all connects to life in today’s world.
What You Will Learn:
Stories, unspoken rules, religion, specific foods, and more, blended to form the culture and beliefs of our ancestors. Explore how these influenced your ancestors throughout their lives as they developed their sense of identity and built a culture that has often been passed down through generations.
Course discussions include family folklore, culture and subculture, and how our ancestor’s belief systems and core values relate to our present-day lives.
You will learn how culture affected our immigrant ancestors’ lives including language differences, stereotypes and nonverbal misinterpretations. Societal needs such as inclusion, affection and personal control are explored.
Joseph Campbell’s Hero Theory and why a personal journey is necessary is covered in depth. You will explore the terms he used and the reasoning behind his theory. Several family hero stories are examined to illustrate how his theory has affected family research today.
The course also includes a look at symbolism, inside jokes, as well as myths and legends.
This course can be taken for personal interest or as an elective. It is one of the courses included in the Professional Development Certificate.
