Anatomy of a Hint

This session looks at the popularity of Ancestry hints and the importance of critically analysing each one on its individual pros and cons. Hints are becoming a huge part of genealogical research and they can be a powerful tool but must be used correctly. As an example, she will examine a hint offered in her own family tree, which is attached to many different users’ trees, and breakdown where it comes from, whether it is correct, and how to prove or rebut it. As so many people use Ancestry’s hints, it is vital that new family historians understand how to use them and when not to use them. Participants should have used Ancestry previously and have a basic awareness of shaky leaves before attending this session.

It explains the history, the format, changes over time and demonstrates the main websites to use. This is supplemented by newspaper death notices. It’s also particularly of use to people using DNA who need to build out trees of unresponsive matches.
