January is the beginning of a brand-new year and that means New Opportunities! Our students at The National Institute for Genealogical Studies are preparing to begin their first courses for 2022. Our Educational Goals have been set for the year and we are on our way to making this a positive and effective year as we work towards those objectives.
Are you planning a New Project? There are many genealogical projects for organizations within the genealogy or historical communities. They would welcome your help and you would gain a wealth of invaluable experience. Many societies are working to digitize their collections, or need indexers and transcribers. This could introduce you to whole new record types that you were unaware existed. Dealing with original materials gives you hands-on experience like nothing else. Groups are busy scanning and preparing their collections to be shared online. Check Flickr to see if your local archive or library has an account with digitized images.
Do you have a Personal Research Project? Make a list of all the resources you will need to search. Add them to your Location Guides for the area of your research. New records are coming online every day, especially with many repositories experiencing restrictions. Make note of the records or documents you will need to access once they reopen. Having a list of materials and the call numbers, such as for microfilms that need to be searched in-person and onsite, makes preparing for your next research trip so much easier.
Which Institute courses are you taking this year? Create a Plan to make the most of your Time and Research Opportunities. Check our Course Calendar to see when your courses are scheduled to begin. Check your Student Briefcase to make sure they are set to begin on a date that is compatible with your schedule. Start dates can be adjusted to when it will be best to begin. Plan to Succeed in 2022!
Plan to connect with fellow students and researchers interested in your topic of research. Check the schedule for our Virtual Meetings for this month and join a discussion. Consider creating a free profile on GenealogyWise to connect with fellow family historians, and join some of the Groups related to your research interests. Follow this blog. Look for the Subscribe button below, or in the right-side menu, to receive notifications for blog posts.
