Virtual Meetings November 14-19

The National Institute for Genealogical Studies / International Institute of Genealogical Studies hosts several virtual meetings every month. We have a number scheduled for this week, as well as a Student Presentation and our Fall 2022 Graduation ceremony. Details are outlined below. Hope you can join us! Remember, these Virtual Meetings are NOT mandatory for our students. They are a fun and interactive way to ask questions about the courses and/or research at a relevant session. We can all learn from each other!

Lecturing Skills course

Are you interested in developing your genealogy Lecturing Skills? With the uncertainty of restrictions for in-person meetings, many societies and organizations have taken the plunge to host virtual or hybrid meetings, many for the first time. This has created an increased need for presentation lectures and speakers ready to present online. The National Institute for Genealogical Studies / International Institute of Genealogical Studies offers many courses on specific topics, including our Lecturing Skills course.

The Lecturing Skills Including Preparation course focuses on the skills needed to present genealogical-related lectures to a variety of audiences. It is a “hands-on” course where the student will develop all aspects of the lecturing process including: the proposal and biographical sketch; marketing; syllabus material; creating lecture slides; and much more. The step-by-step course material will guide you all the way, creating templates to use over and over, no matter what your topic may be.

Note: In order to complete this course, the student must develop and give a 30-minute lecture to an audience of students and/or genealogical society members virtually via our Virtual Learning Room. This very practical application of skills learned will launch them with confidence into becoming a valuable asset to any genealogical society or organization, or add an additional income stream to their genealogical business plan.

Student Lounge – October 2022

Calling all students! Each month, we set a time aside for our students to connect with their fellow classmates for an opportunity to discuss topics relevant to their online education goals. We are pleased to announce that we have just confirmed a special presentation for our October Student Lounge virtual meeting, which is scheduled for next week. Plan now to pull up a chair and join us for a short presentation by this month’s special guest, Jennifer Roodzant of Descendant Genealogy.

Title: Clustering DNA Matches with Gephi to Pinpoint Genetic Networks

Presentation Description: Have you ever had difficulty uncovering shared match groups in your DNA results? Have you spent hours looking for connections between you and your matches? Gephi is a graph and visualization platform that quickly and efficiently clusters shared matches into genetic networks. Say goodbye to the long days of sorting matches! You will leave with a toolkit for rapidly clustering matches in Gephi to identify the shared most recent common ancestors.

Biography: Jennifer Roodzant is a professional genealogist and speaker specializing in DNA and southern United States research. She volunteers as secretary for the Napa Valley Genealogical Society. She is a certificate holder in Genealogical Research from Boston University and ProGen Study Groups. Jennifer applies the Genealogical Proof Standard to resolve complex research objectives.

Q&A time will be provided after this short presentation. Then join your fellow students to chat about DNA, courses, or family history! Be sure to grab a cuppa and join us when the STUDENT LOUNGE is open!
