Genealogy in a Package

What’s on Your 2022 Wish List?

Tis the season for packages! Some are arriving at our door; some we are piling into our car at the mall; while others are safely hidden away until it’s time to wrap them for that special day. We all love to receive them and to open them. However, some package contents are better than others. Slippers and socks are fun (usually), and a gift card is fun to spend, but how much better if your package was genealogy-related?

The holidays are a great time to gather with family members and reminisce about days gone by. Be sure to make the most of opportunities to share stories and browse through the old photo albums. (Psst – make note to scan any photos you didn’t know about!) Ask questions about your family history and watch them share their memories to the next generation.

Do you have family members who are asking you what is on your Wish List? Have you been thinking about your genealogy wish list? Have you already drafted some 2022 research goals? It may be that you have dropped several hints, but what will you receive? If they need some suggestions, we have a solution! The National Institute for Genealogical Studies can make sure your package has just the right online courses for your 2022 genealogy education plan.

You can choose any of our 225+ courses individually, or one of our specific Course Packages listed below, but did you know that you can also create your own unique package? Choose 4, 7, 8, 10 or 13 courses and make your package with the exact courses needed for your own distinctive research project. See details for all Course Packages here.

LEADERS IN ONLINE GENEALOGY EDUCATION since 1997

The Waiting is Finally Over

The hourglass has finally run its course leading up to our Second Announcement. Thank you for your patience. No more suspense, the details are now released.

A Special Announcement from The National Institute for Genealogical Studies:

20% DISCOUNT – words you like to hear…
REGISTRATION FEE INCREASE… words I am sure you don’t want to hear.

December 2007 was the last time the registration fees were adjusted. Yes, you read that correctly, 14 years ago! Remember 2008? That’s when the economy was hit hard. We froze the fees in 2008, and although we have tried numerous times since to raise the fees, the timing simply was not right. Nearly two years ago, in March 2020, we were in the process of again starting the process and then… Covid hit. People were losing their jobs; again, we pulled back and left the fees where they were.

The time has come; it must be done.

BUT it is not all bad news…
We know that for some, this will be more difficult than for others. Here are some OPTIONS:

  1. 20% DISCOUNT on ALL registrations (includes individual courses and packages). Use CODE at checkout. (We had originally planned for a 10% discount, but it’s the time of the year to be jolly!) Note: CODE has now expired.
Registrations must be received by midnight Eastern Time on Monday, December 20th.
  2. Register Packages to complete your program. Save substantially: the more courses in the package, the bigger the savings. (Not sure what you need to finish your program? Contact us.)
  3. Money is a little tight because of Christmas? Ask us to defer your payment.
  4. PAYMENT PLAN: We do not charge interest nor service fees, and we can spread the payments over several months. We know Christmas is just around the corner; if it helps, we can start your payments in January 2022.

If you have any questions, or you would like to know the most economical way of completing your program, please contact me:

  1. On our site: click on the button at the bottom of each page, leave us a message, we will contact you. Make sure to include your name, email address, and phone number if you would like us to call you.
  2. Send an email: admin@genealogicalstudies.com
  3. Call: 1-800-580-0165 ext 1

We are here to help you reach your genealogical goals…

Announcing the DNA and Genetic Genealogy Certificate

The pursuit of genealogical evidence requires a combination of researching original records and other methodologies, including incorporating DNA to connect families and uncover ancestral lines. For that reason, The National Institute for Genealogical Studies, is proud to announce our latest certificate program, DNA and Genetic Genealogy. We are very pleased that this program is under the guidance of genetic genealogist: Shannon Combs Bennett, MSc, QG, PLCGS.

Genealogists interested in DNA, and what it offers, need to be prepared to understand what DNA can reveal and how to interpret DNA test results. In addition, they need to be able to find and understand relevant matches. The DNA and Genetic Genealogy Certificate will help the genealogist not only better understand genetic genealogy, but also prepare them to successfully interpret results, assist in various situations, and continue learning about this field as new discoveries are made. In addition, a regular virtual meeting on the topic of DNA is facilitated by Shannon Combs Bennett. This meeting assists students with the course and DNA questions.

LEADERS IN ONLINE GENEALOGY EDUCATION since 1997

DNA: Methodology & Analysis

The National Institute for Genealogical Studies is pleased to announce the launch of our newest online course.

OUR NEWEST ADVANCED DNA COURSE

DNA: Methodology & Analysis
This course covers advanced techniques associated with DNA methodology, analysis and strategies. Students should have a firm grasp of the understanding of autosomal, Y-chromosome, and mitochondrial DNA.

More information from the course description:
While advances in DNA testing are exciting and useful, there are real limitations. DNA does not hold all of the answers for everyone. Nevertheless, it plays an important role for many who are searching for family, or those simply hoping to learn more about themselves and their genetics. In some cases, DNA testing has helped people discover unknown medical risks, which is invaluable in situations where little or no family health history is available.
When incorporating DNA into a genealogical search, the chances of success depend on a variety of factors. At a basic level, people biologically related to you will have to take a DNA test and share the results on the same service or platform you choose to test. After that you will need to use the tools available for DNA analysis allowing you to understand the results to their fullest.

Each DNA testing company provides its own set of tools you can use for making sense of your DNA matches, and these tools change over time. Some are extensive, some may seem overly simplistic, and some seem like they are the same from one company to the next but have small differences that can make a difference to a search. This course will help you determine what tools are best for you and when to use them.

BASIC DNA COURSES

DNA: Introduction to Genetic Genealogy covers the basics of DNA and genetic inheritance and is a comprehensive introduction to the three main test types: mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), Y chromosome DNA (YDNA), and autosomal DNA (atDNA). Explore how they relate to genealogy.

DNA: Autosomal DNA – Testing for Everyone examines what Autosomal or Admixture DNA (atDNA) is, how it is passed down, and what a genetic genealogy test will tell you. Discover how atDNA is a wonderful tool for unlocking your hidden past when combined with traditional paper genealogy.

DNA: Tracing Maternal & Paternal Lines focuses on two types of DNA testing for genealogy: Y-Chromosome DNA (yDNA) and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) testing. Discover how to read and interrupt your testing results.

ADVANCED DNA COURSES

DNA: Special Circumstances – Adoptees & Unknown Parentage
This research course explores how to use genealogy and genetics to uncover genealogical roots, connect with biological family, and better understand medical history. The emphasis will be on adoptees and those helping adoptees with their DNA and genealogy.

DNA PACKAGES

The National Institute for Genealogical Studies DNA Research packages include courses relevant to understanding DNA and how it can be used in genealogical research. The first DNA Package includes the four DNA courses listed above. The second DNA package includes the above courses, plus the four DNA courses listed below.

DNA: Understanding Testing and Research Strategies (4 course package)
DNA and Relevant Topics (8 course package)

MORE DNA COURSES

Forensic Genealogy is a fast-growing field dealing with the genealogical research that might have legal implications. This course is designed to help forensic researchers identify and contact living people. Students will learn some of the basic skills necessary to get started and investigate specific career subsets in forensic work.

Genealogy Ethical Guidelines & Standards examines various situations all researchers may encounter, exploring ethical considerations faced when sharing genealogy research. Whether you are a hobby genealogist, society member, serious researcher, or a professional genealogist, ethics affect your work and require the adherence to the standards of a Code of Ethics to make diverse ethical decisions.

Organizing a ONE NAME STUDY examines the art of researching a specific SURNAME. Course material will elaborate on the many different elements you should consider as you begin. Organizing your research, searching for primary sources around the world, analysing the data you acquire, publicising, publishing and preserving your work are topics to be thoroughly discussed along with tips and techniques in the field of One Name Studies.

Organizing a ONE PLACE STUDY studies the people in a community within the context of the place they live. A One Place Study brings family and local history together, reconstructing the community to gain insights into the lives of the people who have walked the streets, ploughed the fields, worked and worshipped in a place. Discover the sources of information available to researchers, how to access them and the fascinating details which can be uncovered.
