Are you baffled by the Latin found in historical documents? Latin is a complex language that often leaves us shaking our heads in bewilderment. Although many consider it a “dead” language, some of it is still used today in business, medical, and legal documents. It is also the foundational language of many “modern” languages such as French, Italian, and Romanian.
Latin for Genealogists will introduce you to the basics of written Latin. You’ll examine sentence structure, grammar, numbering systems, dates, and times.
What You Will Learn
You will begin by looking at the Medievel, Classical, and Church or Ecclesiastical uses of the language. The different characteristics and approximate years of when these were used are discussed.
As you become familiar with the language, you will learn the alphabet, numbers, dates and times, and months of the year. The course will guide you through word lists, abbreviations, and given names. You’ll explore grammar including nouns, verbs, voice, inflections, and sentence structure.
How Latin was used in British and Italian records is examined. You will look at the different record types including birth, baptismal, marriage, and burial. Latin was used in both Irish and Scottish records as well, primarily in the Roman Catholic Church records and town charters. Other record types that are discussed include probate, and medical (including prescriptions).
Each module of the course includes examples of various documents, websites to refer to, and recommended reading to further build your skills. You will find several charts and lists of words, numbers, and common phrases in the course material. Practical exercises are included to give you experience in translating and transcribing.
Latin for Genealogists course becomes a mandatory Methodology course and a prerequisite to ME-302 – Palaeography: Reading and Understanding Historical Documents as of 1 January 2025.
