Church or Ecclesiastical Records are one of the largest and most important record sets in Italian genealogical research. Although most of these records remain in the archives in Italy, many of them have been digitized and are now available online.
What You Will Learn:
In Italian: Catholic Church Records Part 1 you will explore how and why these records were created, and the types of records which can be found. You will discuss what genealogical information can be found in the records, what archives they are stored in, and how to access them.
Part 1 of these two courses will also take you through examining and understanding the language used in the writing of these records. You will explore Ecclesiastical Jurisdictions to give you a firm understanding of Parishes, Diocese and Archdiocese.
Some of the records discussed include birth and Baptism, death and burial, and confirmation. Several examples of these records are included as well as explanations of how to work with and transcribe them.
Italian: Catholic Church Records Part 2 continues where Part 1 left off. In this course, you will focus on two types of records: marriage, and State of the Souls.
A 1564 decree made marriage in the Roman Catholic Church a sacrament. This was reinforced by a Papal proclamation in 1595 with specific requirements that were dictated by the Council of Trent. The reading and posting of marriage banns had specific requirements, as well. You will discuss these requirements along with the responsibilities of the priest involved in the marriage.
State of the Souls records were kept to record the vital statistics of each parishioner, as well as the sacraments they had taken. These family books are an excellent source of genealogical information. You may find the records of several generations of a family kept in the same book. These records are not solely in Italy but were required to be kept by all Roman Catholic parishes in the world. You will explore where these records are kept as well as how they can be used as census substitutes.
Several examples of marriage banns, marriage records, and State of the Souls records are included in the course material.
Both courses include websites and recommended readings to further enhance your research.
Italian: Catholic Church Records Parts 1 and 2 are included in the Italian Records Certificate. The courses may also be taken as electives towards any certificate program or for personal Interest.
