Parish Chest Records

“Alms for the poor.” is a saying many of us have heard at one time or another. Yet do we fully understand exactly what “alms” are or what they were used for?

English: Poor Law and Parish Chest Records will define what alms are, how they were collected and who they were given to.

Many families lived in an impoverished state at one time in their lives. The reasons for this vary, for some it was lack of employment opportunities while for others it could have been the death of the breadwinner of the family. The Church and Government took on the responsibility for the care of these unfortunates.

What You Will Learn:

English: Poor Law and Parish Chest Records will take you through the history of the Poor Law from its beginning in the late 1300’s to the early 1900’s. The many iterations of the laws as well as definitions of the categories of ‘poor’ that our ancestors may have found themselves in. An explanation of Parish Chests, their contents and their intended use is also discussed. Illegitimate births, orphans, single parents, and workhouses are among the many topics of discussion.  Research strategies and how to find relevant records are explored.

This course can be taken for personal interest or as an elective. It is one of the courses included in the English Records Certificate.
