Guest post by Samantha John, PLCGS, of Lyfelynes Family History Samantha’s business, Lyfelynes Family History, is based in Melbourne, Australia. She strives to provide her clients with an emotional connection to their ancestors with history and stories that will be shared with family members time and again.
Genealogy has intrigued me since childhood that became a hobby in my teens. Nearly 40 years later, and after completing my Diploma in Family History at the University of Tasmania, I’ve been a professional genealogist for the past 5 years. As with any profession, it’s vital to keep up-to-date with resources and commit to continuing education. Learning new areas and research techniques provides the best outcome for clients. I also enjoy learning!
In the past 18 months, I completed, with Distinction, my Professional Learning Certificate in Genealogical Studies (PLCGS) with a focus on Australian and Irish Records, including Methodology, and the New Zealand research course through the International Institute of Genealogical Studies. I’ve almost completed the DNA and Genetic Genealogy certificate, and am about to start German and Italian Records with English and Scottish Records certificate programs purchased and waiting in the wings.
As a genealogist in Australia, most of my clients have Australian, Irish, and UK origins. But it’s important for me to offer genealogical research in other places. My continuing studies will provide more services to clients of diverse cultures and origin countries.
I love to uncover the stories and social history, not just names, dates, and places. The difference in handing a client an informative report stored in a drawer and stories that connect a client emotionally to their ancestors means those stories get shared with other family members. Hopefully, well-researched stories that will travel through generations.
A believer in lifelong learning, I’m eager to work on several more certificates on GenealogicalStudies.com. These certificates and courses reinforced my knowledge, and provide me with so many additional useful avenues to explore.
The International Institute of Genealogical Studies offers quality online education with over 240 courses. Our wide range of courses cover specific countries, enhanced methodological research, skills to maximize your research time, and all count toward the certification you choose.
